Post Modernism
Postmodernism
postmodern films often contain the following characteristics:
Breaking the fourth wall= when characters talk to the audience, they ignore the imaginary wall keeping the audience separated from the characters
In a reflection comment below, please tell me why you think 'The Lego Movie' had elements of postmodernism. For example, why did it challenge genre convetions/imiate other stories? Think about it from an audience perspective.
I think the Lego movie has elements of postmodernism in order to become a memorable unique film. Some of the gender and race stereotypes that were challenged were most likely in the film to capture the audiences attention, allowing the audience to question the stereotypes and find entertainment in the unusually and lack of 'cliche' narrative. These representations reflect the developing liberal society we live in, and gives representation to minority communities in society. The subdominant representations and counter typical narrative (according to Todorov's theory and stereotypical representations) grabs the audience's attention, and allows them to feel 'escapism' as the film comes across as something completely new to them. That same audience is more likely to re-watch the film as a result of the unique feelings they got whilst watching it, which leads to more wealth and income for Warner Bro's.
Hyper reality is another element of the lego movie and post modernism that the lego movie includes. The animation with lego figures and completely 'lego filled' world allows the audience to feel 'escapism'.
