Representation

Representation

  • Emmet adheres to the subdominant representation of white males since he is seen running away and looking scared in both his poster and the main poster
  • However, he is centred in the main poster, which presents him as 'the hero', which adheres tot the dominant representation of men in the media.
  • Emmet screams "I'm scared" or "I want my mum" in the tv advert. ??
  • Wild Style adheres to he subdominant representation of females in the media since she appears to look strong and confident in her poster, and the main poster, despite all the chaos happening behind her. She's represented as a strong character in the main poster, which challenges the stereotype of 'the princess', which would be assumed of her since she's represented as a female protagonist.
  • She seems to be wearing makeup  like eye makeup and lipstick. This supports the stereotype that females in the media need o wear makeup in order to be accepted.
  • She's also behind Emmet (who is a man) which adheres to the stereotype that females in the media are less important than men, she is less important than the hero.
  • Wearing leather, which is sexual and adheres to the stereotype that women are sexual objects.
  • Wild style appears to contrast the stereotype that females in the media have to look a specific way. Her hair is tied up and coloured, she has freckles and wears dark clothing, however she is also represented as desirable. All of these aspects don't adhere to the stereotype of females in the media.
  • Vitruvious is represented as blind, and having that disability. He does not adhere to the stereotype of disabled people in the media since he is represented as magical and powerful.
  • He is named after a roman philosopher.
  • He has darkskin, so he adheres to the subdominant representation of black people in the media since ..
  • Stereotype of old people in the media being frail, weak, ill, cute and cuddly is being challenged through virtuous' wisdom, knowledge, magic strength and determination.
How does virtuous challenge the media stereotype of ethnic minorities?
How does Vitruvius challenge the media stereotype of old people?
  • Vitruvius challenges the stereotype of black men in the media by being represented as important, strong and wise. People of african descent are often represented as gangsters, school drop outs, uneducated and from a poor financial background. Contrastingly, Vitruvius is represented as wise and magical, with his long white beard. The fact that he has his own poster implies to the audience that he's a protagonist and has great importance in the film, which also contrasts the stereotype of black people in the media, since they are usually represented as the bad guy, or the gangster. His headband represents innocence and magic, as the ring around the head has connotations of angels. This presents him as a good character, or even the hero in the film; which contrasts the stereotype that black men are always the bad guys.

  1. Great work here Ellie! Well done.

You've made a significant improvment the last couple of weeks, what we really need to focus on in our intervention sessions are the many pieces of work/blog posts that are missing or need improving. There is plenty of time for you to catch up, but we need to ensure that we meet weekly.

    Please respond below:
Why do you think the advertising campaign celebrates different representations?
