Representation
Representation
select, construct, stereotype
And why?
1. -"May: I will fine greedy bosses who bet: ray their workers" - positive representation of May: to reflect the scott trust values of the newspapers - being liberal, reporting fairly, not persuading readers
- "trump plays blame game as US government shuts down" - reports on a different country, the newspaper is celebrating other countries.
- Image of women- me too campaign (scotts trust wants to inform people about what's happening today, (me too campaign), also represents women as strong - which challenges the stereotype of women being weak.
2. - The issue of feminism is present on the cover (with the me too campaign) (reporting fairly) (to represent gender and sexuality)
Who is present/absent
3. There are no older people on the cover (strange since the readers are mainly middle class liberal middle aged people).
- Arabs and asians are absent
- Large image of female is present- the picture challenges the stereotype of women in the media (she isn't sexualised since she is wearing covering, average looking clothes. The shot type is a low shot which represents her as powerful and dominant, and the readers as inferior. This is a countertype of how women are represented in the media.
- [ I think the scotts trust chose this image, and the media language that comes with it to adhere to their brand image of people of all genders, ethnicities, races and sexualities being represented as equal. This conforms to the left of centre, or liberal beliefs of this newspaper. ]
-Countertype to the black footballer.
Language
4. - May's story is a positive story and the language used does not inforce any specific beliefs on the readers. There is one negative word used in this title, "greedy" to be specific. However the story is positive and so the negative and positive aspects of this title almost counteract each other, giving off neutral opinions.
- It reflects on the current state of UK politics; just reporting on the facts.
- Contrastingly, for the trump title, there is lots of negative language used such as "blame" and "shut down". This inforces liberal or more leftist beliefs onto the readers. According to the scotts trust this is acceptable since it is talking about US politics, and therefore not expressing any favouritism towards any UK party's.
- At the top of the newspaper, the words "Bolder, better and brighter" are in a bright yellow, bold font which is positive and represents the newspaper as accepting, happy, and without any glimpse of cynical, strong political opinions. This adheres to the scotts trust's values of being unbiased and liberal.
